Treasure Island

This is one of the most interesting sailing sites in the bay area, but it is also an advanced site. Tides and currents make it somewhat dangerous, and there is also some boat traffic (less than Crissy).

The launch is located at the NW corner of treasure island. To get there go through the gate then make your first right. Go as far as you can, then make a left. Go as far as you can, then make your way north and west until you see the parking lot. You will see a jetty with a marker on the end and a boat ramp. Rig your gear in the parking lot, then either go over the rocks (there is one area that is improved) or carry your gear to the ramp and walk it down. I like to walk right next to the ramp, since the ramp itself can be slippery.

You are now in a complete wind shadow, and must make your way somehow past the jetty. This is usually very amusing for the people watching you. Once you are at the jetty there will be another very strong wind shadow, and right after the wind is usually very strong.

Stay upwind. Sailing TI on a flood can be problem if the wind dies. You might miss the island altogether and may not be able to swim back to it. Sailing on an ebb is recommended, and in either case staying upwind is a must. It is prudent not to sail alone here, not to sail without a vhf radio, and be sure someone knows where you are sailing. Watch out for boat traffic.

If you are sailing on an ebb, and the wind dies, you may get sucked away from the island faster than you can swim/slog there.

Water temperature tends to be quite cold, not as bad as Crissy, but close, a full suit is necessary.

I carry a VHF when I sail here, but at minimum let someone know where you are sailing.
