Nearby Windguru Forecasts

Excellent wavesailing on SE or W winds. Side-offshore conditions. 4WD vehicles only with launch usually anywhere within the 2 to 3 mile stretch of beach. There are two access ramps for this site. The first site is located in the National Park Service land near the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. The turn off is located across from the fish cleaning station. Use this ramp if winds are blowing from the SE. The second access ramp is located near the Billy Mitchell airstrip in Frisco. Use this ramp if winds are blowing from the West.

Advanced to expert level only.

“The Cove” #1 on my list is certainly is easiest wave sailing location on the island. In addition to being very user friendly, this spot can yield a large gentle wave with a long ride with lots of room on the inside with hardly any shore break. (yeah i know..doesn't sound like Hatteras at all:-) Even if the swell is not head high its still a lot of fun when its waist to chest high or so. The “Cove” itself is the inside the hook that Cape Point forms. Any East or South East swell begins to break at the tip of the cove and runs along the sand bar into the cove providing long ride. The sand bar is wide here and the floor of the ocean rises gradually which produces a very UN Hatteras like wave which has a shallow angle and breaks slow and gentle. Even logo high waves at this location can easily be handled by the intermediate wave sailor. The conditions here will make you feel like a super star with a super wide area of flat water on the inside give you plenty of time to get moving to make it out thru the break. The unique shape of the wave here makes navigating out thru the swell easy and pushing white water of even large waves is confidence boosting. And even if you do get tagged by a big one..no worries it just rolls right over you. When to go: This spot needs one of the most elusive wind directions to make it happen. When it blows any where from ENE to E to SE it can be a lot of fun. But the magic really happens when a SE wind is generated by a low pressure system to the south, if this is happening drop what ever you are doing and go to the Cove immediately. How get there: Take the road leading into the Cape Hatteras National seashore from Rt 12 in Buxton. Follow the campground signs. The beach access to Cape Point is just 100 yds past the entrance to the Cape Point Campground. If you have 4WD, its just a minutes drive from the access ramp, ¾ mile or so, I've walked it before but I don't recommended carrying your stuff. If you don't have 4WD park at the fish cleaning tables.
