Wave sailing Mecca of the East Coast. Best wavesailing with the perfect sideoff conditions in NE winds. 4WD access recommended, but not required.

See video (http://www.ridehatteras.com/videos/ws_ocracoke20050906.wmv) of Hatteras crew ripping at the site!

jkm adds..This spot yields the most consistent side off down-the-line wave sailing on the Outer Banks. I think that its possibly the best spot on the east coast for wave sailing. Lots of fun from waist to mast high, the north end of ocracoke can produce long peeling waves that you pick up way on the outside and ride the whole way into the beach. When its small, its a good place for intermediate ocean sailors to hone their wave skills. The north end provide clean side off port tack wave sailing, when its head high or bigger it will be a day you'll remember for a long time. When to go: What makes the North End work is NE wind. Which is good since we get a lot of that. The cool thing is, while the NE wind is making the east facing beaches of Hatteras (ego beach etc) look like a washing machine, that same swell generated by the NE wind heads south and wraps around the island as the island bends towards the SW. Now the swell is actually heading west and the same NE wind that created the swell is now cleaning it up!. NE here is side off. The only rule to follow here is that it must blow NE for at least 12 to 18 hours BEFORE it starts to work, overwise there might not be any wave. If you want to get some no wave/small wave practice in go ahead and go of the first day otherwise sail at the next spot on the first day of a NE. Works well around Low tide. How to get there: Easy access for all. Take the free ferry from Hatteras to Ocracoke Island. For those with 4WD you take the first beach access ramp immediately after exiting the ferry, drive on to the beach and park. For 2WD park in the first parking lot on the left just after the beach access ramp. Its a short easy carry thru the dunes. The ferry runs on the hour in the spring and every ½ hour during the summer months so plan ahead, make sure you have enough time in the day to make the ferry ride and still catch some sailing.
