Windsurfing near Los Barriles

Los Barriles is located on the Sea of Cortez, about an hour's drive north of Cabo in southern Baja Mexico. It is a fishing-turned-resort town that has grown quickly over the past decade.

From November to about March, the El Norte winds cycle on and off every few days, bringing a mix of windy and calm days. Winds can be good, with an average sail size of 5-6 meters most windy days.

The main (only?) windsurfing rental operation there as of now is Vela, which has nice gear located on the beach. It is affiliated with a hotel there if you are interested in a package deal. There are also mountain bikes available at the hotel with some excellent XC trails in the surrounding hills.

Conditions are usually ocean swell with wind chop, not much in the wave department. The shorebreak is small to moderate. The sea is also full of marine life, so sightings of whales, dolphins, rays, etc, are common.

Just north of town is a long undeveloped section of beach where the kiters typically launch. They can shuttle up in a taxi, and do a long downwinder to the hotel area, or stay upwind, depending on their skills. They are requested to stay out of the windsurfing launch area.
