Huntington Beach, a.k.a. "Surf City", is a world reknown surfing spot. Thus the waves here are also pretty good for windsurfing--when there is wind.
This is a city beach that lies between two state beaches where windsurfing and kiting are banned: Bolsa Chica State Beach (Northwest of the cliffs) and Huntington State Beach (Southeast of the pier). The beach is split into two equally sized sections: "the cliffs"/"dog beach" Northwest of Goldenwest Street, and the area Southeast to the pier. At the cliffs, high tide can bring the ocean all the way to the rocks, so its not the best place to launch or land. I like to park on PCH (quarter eating parking meters $1.50/hour) right at Goldenwest street because there is grass to rig on and the water is just a short stroll across the sand.
When there is wind, it is almost straight onshore. However, the strong current will drag you Southeast towards the pier if you aren't planing in both straps. It's not really worth heading out unless it is blowing 15+ knots. Although this is rare, winter winds came late in 2006 and the first couple of weeks of March have been making this place fun. Other than a half dozen kiters, I have only seen one other windsurfer out here.
