jkm adds..While Hatteras Inlet works well in similar conditions as the North End of Ocracoke the wave here is different and works well at High tide. Its often easy here to get thru the shore break, this spot can reward you with large organized waves when there is a decent swell rolling in. The sand bar is wide and shallow yielding a peeling wave with an occasional section that breaks in front of you for that perfect air off the lip. The island bends more towards the west just before the inlet which allows the wave to peel along the shoreline. When you kick out after a long ride, its an easy sail right back up to the pick up point. During summer 06' Hurricane Florence pumped in mast high swell here for 3 days while a high pressure provided the wind with clear skies. When to go: NE and ENE wind are preferred but West works as well. NE and ENE provides port tack sailing and W gives you Starboard. I often sail here when I don't have the time for the full day commitment of two ferry rides for the Ocracoke session or if the time I have to sail coincides with High tide. How to get there: 4WD only. Its a long drive from the beach access right across from the new Maritime Mesuem beside the ferry docks. Enter the beach or take the inner road (pole road) south west until you see an old metal lookout tower and keep going about 250 yards past the tower and you'll notice the bend of the beach..that's the spot.
