Windsurfing near Cocina Beach

Coquina Beach is the largest public beach park on the Outer Banks. Plenty of facilities and ample parking for both beach goers, surfers, and windsurfers. For windsurfing, there is usually not a huge contingent of sailors since most of the ocean side action occurs further south on Hatteras Island. However, Coquina is a great spot if you want to get into the ocean with your windsurf rig while staying in the Nags Head area or points further north.

During the summer months, beach driving is not permitted; however, in the off season, 4WD access is available for hauling your gear out onto the sand.

Coquina offers ocean side and wave sailing. Predominant wind directions are side-on NNE to NE, while side to side-off S or SSW also works quite well at Coquina. The IWindsurf meter at Oregon Inlet is about 2 miles south of Coquina and provides the best indicator for wind speed there. Conditions include sand bar outside breaks, and inside shore pound. However, depending upon tides, it is usually not too bad since the area does not have a deep drop off.

All in all, its a fun spot with usually plenty of people on the beach if you decide to try a solo session.
