Windsurfing near Bucklands Beach

Nearby Windguru Forecasts

The ditch offers a variety of sailing conditions, from dead flat water to chop jumping off the end of the Glendowie sand-spit. Also it isn't far to sail out into the harbour. Another good activity is to sail upwind up the estuary in a southerly or southwesterly to Panmure and blast back downwind. But it can get pretty choppy here compared to some other locations. And it is a busy area, so watch out for ferries and other boats.

Before you get into the ditch, there is a somewhat sheltered area that is used for windsurfing practice, and is an excellent place to show off your freestyle skills. This area is perfect for beginners. Don't venture into the ditch unless you are reasonably skilled (you can tack, do a non-carving jibe, and don't fall into the water at 3 bft).

There is little distance to the water at low tide and there are good rigging spots and parking.

Wind Direction

Southwesterly or northwesterly winds.

Hazards

A couple of yachts and boats are moored between that and the deep channel used by the ferries. You have to pass these yaghts, so make sure you are reasonably proficient and confident in the chop. But still stay at least two mast lengths away to avoid slamming your sail into one. After that you're into the channel, so now avoid the ferries. Even if they're not that fast, there size means they generate even more chop, so stay on that board and cross that channel to get into the part of the ditch where these boats don't venture.

There is a sandbar which might not be visible unless at low tide, but you will run into it, while its getting low tide, so start avoiding these spots when the tide gets lower. They're fairly easy to spot, but it is also easy to get tricked and the water might already be shallower than expected.
