Barnegat Bay, which is perfectly set up for afternoon thermals, is one of NJ's best sailing spots.
All directions work except west which will almost always be up and down, and Northeast which usually means rain. The area is best with a S-SW wind, which builds in the afternoon. Weed fins are usually required.
The beauty of this spot is the variety of conditions. If you you're into flat water speed sailing, best on a S/SW day, stay inside the cove just south of the marina for flat water speed runs. Head further out to find larger chop, and depending on the wind and tide, some great rolling swell toward the channel on the mainland side of the bay. This is also a very good learning spot as the water is chest deep or less until you get about halfway to the mainland.
You can park on the side streets, but not on Bay Avenue.
A little further north the town maintains a boat launch and parking area with some grassy areas for rigging. There are in season fees for the use of this area.
