Ardingly Activity Centre is a great place to learn. They run courses for beginners and up to an intermediate level.
The best wind direction is N, N/W. A good F4/5 brings great blasting conditions. Also, as the best direction is from the North, its a good chance to get out if you are a south coast sailor and a nice northerlys blowing:)
You do have to pay to use the lake however. Either for the year, or each time you go. It doesn't cost a fortune, and there are toilets, changing rooms and hot showers for those cold days. There is also a selection of hot drinks and snacks available.
